My name is Sílvia Carvalho, originally from Lisbon, Portugal and currently based in Berlin, Germany. I’m a young researcher passionate about molecular biology and dedicated to science communication and outreach.
My research quest has focused on understanding the complexities of gene expression regulation across its different layers and dimensions. Before pursuing my PhD, I dedicated myself to studying the interplay between chromatin dynamics and gene expression, as well as DNA repair processes, contributing to the understanding of misregulated mechanisms in cancer and malaria. Currently, I am engaged in investigating gene regulation from a 3D perspective. Specifically, my current research focus lies in the understanding of splicing networks during early embryo development.
I am also passionate about open science and science outreach and literacy. Along these lines, I have recently established an educational-based citizen science platform on DNA barcoding that enables me to deliver science to different communities regardless of their background. I am devoted to creating strategies that promote inclusive, equitable and transparent research and educational programs able to shape the future of science in a representative and diverse way.
