Phase Transition of RNA-protein Complexes into Ordered Hollow Condensates
https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.01.10.902353v1
Phase separation was a hot topic yet again at this year’s Biophysical Society Meeting. This preprint extends the landscape of liquid-liquid phase separation to some very interesting structures including hollow condensates.
Allosteric action of nucleotides on Hsp90 across several time- and length scales
https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.02.15.950725v1
Hsp90 is a dimeric molecular chaperone that is thought to aid protein folding by a series of conformational changes driven by ATP hydrolysis, although the precise mechanism is still unclear. Using single molecule fluorescence measurements and molecular dynamics simulations, this study demonstrates that nucleotide binding and hydrolysis affect the overall Hsp90 dimer by allosteric mechanisms.
Divergent ion selectivity and sensitivity to anti-hypertensive and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs of DEG/ENaC/ASIC channels in C. elegans
https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.02.12.946681v1?rss=1
The class of ion channels studied in this work are important drug targets for e.g. anti-inflammatory molecules. The authors here express five channels derived from C. elegans in Xenopus laevis oocytes to probe their properties in detail, leading to the surprising finding that they differ in their ion sensitivities and modulation by small molecules.
Kinetic fingerprint of antibody therapies predicts outcomes of Alzheimer clinical trials
https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/815308v1
Clinical trials for Alzheimer’s disease have been notoriously unsuccessful over the past years. This study uses elegant methods to demonstrate why one antibody that recently showed some effect in clinical trials acts on amyloid-beta aggregation via a unique mechanism.
A Tug of War Between Condensate Phases in a Minimal Macromolecular System
https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.01.29.925099v1
More phase separation: this study shows the interplay between four components in condensate formation, to better understand the behaviour of complex biomolecular mixtures such as membrane-less organelles.

October in preprints – DevBio & Stem cell biology
Each month, preLighters with expertise across developmental and stem cell biology nominate a few recent developmental and stem cell biology (and related) preprints they’re excited about and explain in a single paragraph why. Short, snappy picks from working scientists — a quick way to spot fresh ideas, bold methods and papers worth reading in full. These preprints can all be found in the October preprint list published on the Node.
