Mitochondrial fusion in reactive astrocytes coordinates local metabolic domains to promote vascular repair

In the context of injured central nervous system, dysfunction in the blood-brain barrier (BBB) is starting to gain some attention. BBB is formed by the brain endothelial cells, pericytes and astrocytes’ end-feet processes. It has been already shown that astrocytes, upon injury, can adapt their metabolic state modifying the architecture of the mitochondrial network. In this preprint, authors provide evidence of the importance of this mitochondrial network remodeling in astrocytes’ processes to ellicit vascular repair in the injured area.
Mitochondria form cholesterol tethered contact sites with the Nucleus to regulate retrograde response

Contact sites between mitochondria and many organelles are being unraveled. Those contact sites are believed to play an important role in lipid and ion exchange, membrane dynamics and signalling. This preprint highlights the presence of a specific tethering between mitochondria and the nucleus based in cholesterol.
Profound functional and molecular diversity of mitochondria revealed by cell type-specific profiling in vivo

We are all aware about the different mitochondrial morphologies that can take place in different cell types. But what about molecular differences? In this preprint Fecher et al., developed a method to isolate cell type-specific mitochondria from the MitoTag mouse and analyzed the proteome landscape of mitochondria from different tissues.
Mitochondria-derived vesicles deliver antimicrobial payload to control phagosomal bacteria

Mitochondria-derived vesicles (MDV) have been reported to transport mitochondrial components to other intracellular compartments. MDV are described as a quality control system for mitochondria. However, in this preprint, Abuaita et al. describe a new function for MDVs in enhancing macrophage antimicrobial funcion.
Presynaptic boutons that contain mitochondria are more stable

Mitochondria localization in presynaptic structures is positively correlated with synaptic efficacy. Here, authors focus on the study of mitochondrial spatial distribution to presynaptic boutons and how this related to presynaptic structure plasticity. Interestingly, studies are carried in mice using in vivo two-photon imaging.
Mitochondria-Associated Membranes (MAMs) are involved in Bax mitochondrial localization and cytochrome c release

Mitochondria-Associated Membranes or MAM are specific microdomains in ER membrane in close contact to the outer mitochondrial membrane. MAMs are sites of ER and mitochondria communication via lipid synthesis or calcium transfer. In this preprint, authors study the role of MAM stability in Bax localization and implicate this highly dynamic compartment in the regulation of apoptosis.

Peer Review in Biomedical Sciences
Communication of scientific knowledge has changed dramatically in recent decades and the public perception of scientific discoveries depends on the peer review process of articles published in scientific journals. Preprints are key vehicles for the dissemination of scientific discoveries, but they are still not properly recognized by the scientific community since peer review is very limited. On the other hand, peer review is very heterogeneous and a fundamental aspect to improve it is to train young scientists on how to think critically and how to evaluate scientific knowledge in a professional way. Thus, this course aims to: i) train students on how to perform peer review of scientific manuscripts in a professional manner; ii) develop students' critical thinking; iii) contribute to the appreciation of preprints as important vehicles for the dissemination of scientific knowledge without restrictions; iv) contribute to the development of students' curricula, as their opinions will be published and indexed on the preLights platform. The evaluations will be based on qualitative analyses of the oral presentations of preprints in the field of biomedical sciences deposited in the bioRxiv server, of the critical reports written by the students, as well as of the participation of the students during the preprints discussions.
