Quantitative comparison of in vitro and in vivo embryogenesis at a single cell resolution
https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2021.05.07.443179v1
The authors compare new and published scRNAseq data of in vitro embryonic models and real embryos, and discuss the rationale that would justify the choice of specific comparison strategies. In addition to benchmarking in vitro models against the embryo (i.e. their in vivo counterpart), the study also provides a comparison between in vitro models themselves (gastruloids, embryoid bodies, directed differentiation protocols).
The Gastruloid dataset used as a term of comparison is that published in van den Brink 2020, Day 5. Amongst other results, the authors find t=120h Gastruloids to best match E7.75-E8.25 embryos.

Furthermore, they profile early Gastruloids at single cell resolution and – by comparison with embryonic datasets – highlight important differences between modes of development executed by cells in Gastruloids compared to the embryo.
